When caring people join together, roll up their sleeves and take action to make their community better, it's a beautiful thing — and an incredible feeling for everyone involved.
That's Lions. Being a Lion is about leading by example, building relationships and improving the world through kindness.
The Service Journey is an approach to living and serving well. To making a real difference people can see and feel. It embraces four simple phases: Learn, Discover, Act, and Celebrate.
We love these words because they transcend organizational formulas. They have no borders. They are the essence of Lions and Leos. If the past have taught us anything, it's that as we serve, we grow. And we were never meant to stop. Service is our journey. Let's explore it together.
Over the last 100 years, the kindness of Lions and Leos has multiplied across borders, oceans, and continents. With over 1.4 million members, we now have the opportunity to truly change the world.
That's why Lions Clubs International unites the global service around five areas of need. These Global Causes present significant challenges to humanity, and we believe it's our turn to meet them.
The Global Causes include:
Diabetes: An estimated 463 million adults across the world are living with diabetes, and its prevalence is increasing rapidly. By 2045, the number is expected to reach 700 million. Diabetes is a global epidemic that touches every corner of the globe. Lions and Leos around the world fight diabetes by serving their communities one by one.
Vision: Ever since Helen Keller inspired us to champion the cause in 1925, we've served and advocated for the blind and visually impaired. Nearly a century later, this long-standing mission continues unhindered. Lions and Leos help to conserve sight by providing usable eyeglasses to children and adults throughout the world.
Hunger: An estimated 815 million people are affected by hunger, 11% of the global population. 155 million children under age five are stunted due to chronic malnutrition. Lions and Leos serve to improve human flourishing, and we see how the global hunger and nutrition crisis bears upon our local communities. We believe community improvement depends on the thriving of its people.
Childhood Cancer: Cancer is a leading cause of death for children and adolescents around the world. Approximately 300,000 children aged 0 to 19 are diagnosed with cancer each year. In 2019, only 20% of countries had early detection guidelines. Lions and Leos help through increase acts of support to families affected by childhood cancer and increase awareness as a global priority.
Environment: The earth sustains human life. We've seen how our stewardship of natural resources can improve quality of life and increase engagement in our local communities. Our environment is more than a background: it's our home. Lions and Leos serve to strengthened the relationship between the community and its environment by sustainably protecting and restoring.
The San Antonio Bexar Necessities Lions Club is committed to serving these Global Causes in addition to our community's local needs.
As part of the world's largest service organization, our club is additionally committed to Education, Health, and LGBTQ+ local community initiatives.
When you become a Lion, you become part of a global network of volunteers working together. We make a difference in our communities and in the lives of the people we serve. And even though Lions spend most of their time giving, they also get so much in return. Here's a look at some of the great benefits of being a Lion.
Join a Community of Good
There are over 48,000 Lions clubs around the world. Each is filled with people like you who've decided to take action and serve others. Service isn't just meaningful. It's fun. We build new friendships and global connections that can last a lifetime. We laugh. We bond. We serve, and we do it with a smile and an open heart.
Put Leadership Skills into Action
Learning is part of the human experience. It empowers us to improve our thinking, our feeling, our communication, and our service. We are leaders in our community, organizing projects that meet real needs. A Lions club is a great place to develop your leadership skills and offers opportunities for first-class training from our global association.
Experience the Feeling of Service
At the heart of Lions clubs there is one constant: service. Giving your time and energy to others is a fantastic way to help your community. Yet, it also provides a great feeling for you that can spread and have a positive impact in your life and how you approach the world. Volunteering improves our happiness, health and sense of well-being.
